Argyle Village Clerk resigns, two trustees to follow suit soon

ARGYLE — Argyle Village Clerk Jerica Otto left a letter of resignation and the village laptop at the Village Hall on Sept. 21, the day of the monthly meeting. Village Treasurer Kym Brunnert read aloud the letter, in which Otto explained that she appreciated the opportunity to be the village clerk but felt that she could not put forth the necessary effort to do the job and that focusing on her family was her priority at this time.

Mayor Ryan Davis and Trustee Todd Wildhaber were also absent from the meeting, so there was no quorum, and no decisions could be made. Davis and Wildhaber are both moving out of the village limits and will be presenting letters of resignation to the board.

Village residents Elizabeth Wating and Colby Davis have each attended a meeting and are considering joining the board.

In other business, Brunnert said that she and Davis have figured that the village is losing $1,000 monthly in the sewer account. Davis has been looking at how to raise the sewer rates so that the system can cover expenses.

Trustee Felicia Wieberg said that no one would be happy with a sewer rate increase, especially older people who may be on a fixed budget.

“We are going to have to raise the sewer rate,” Brunnert said. “We are not making ends meet.”

Trustees will discuss rate increases at the October meeting.

• Third Street repairs have been completed. Davis contacted the other trustees to get approval for an additional $5,500 to fix the street between the two bars/restaurants in Argyle, bringing the street repair total to $41,500.

The money will come from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the general money market account.

• Brunnert will ascertain whether the trash company can bill customers directly instead of the village being responsible for the payments.

Brunnert has been working through the last month to compile a list of residents and addresses so it’s easier to track trash and sewer bills and merchant and liquor licenses.

• Brunnert has been taking over reading the water meters from Wildhaber for residents that do not want to do it themselves. The village charges residents $10 per month to read their meters for them. Wieberg recommended raising this rate to $25 per month to encourage residents to take responsibility for reading their own meters.

• Brunnert noted that, in the future, she would like all the trustees to receive a copy of the meeting minutes and the financial report before the meeting so there is more time to review them and make possible changes if needed.

• Argyle had the following account balances: general ($11,607), ARPA ($32,596.80), general money market ($64,158.75), sewer payment ($3,680.18), sewer money market ($30,135.16) and debt service ($29,248.73).

• The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
