Borgmeyer, Berhorst score first career goals for Fatima

Fatima battled through a pair of road matches last week, falling 5-1 to Fulton on Tuesday before dropping a 4-2 decision at Stover on Thursday.

The Comets entered the Stover match needing to make several adjustments after dealing with injuries and the heat two nights earlier.

Despite the changes, Fatima remained competitive against the Bulldogs, with Will Borgmeyer and Patrick Berhorst scoring their first varsity goals of the season.

Borgmeyer battled through traffic in the box before finishing with his right foot for Fatima’s first goal.

Fabricio Mendez later delivered a cross from the left side of the box to P. Berhorst, who one-touched the ball into the net for the Comets’ second goal.

“Going into the game, we knew we were going to have to make some major adjustments with our positions and formations, and against a team with that much speed, it really tested us,” said Coach Kelley-Marie Wibberg. “The heat and physicality made it an extremely demanding game, but our guys continued to battle and compete.”

Paden Luebbert recorded 15 saves in goal, while David Sesti had six and Carson Heimericks added four.

Wibberg was encouraged by Fatima’s response despite the loss.

“The team really did well on the improvements we were looking for that match,” Wibberg said. “We need to keep learning from these games and continue to play with everything we have for all 80 minutes.”

Earlier in the week, Fatima lost to Fulton, 5-1.

Cooper Berhorst delivered a free kick that Will Berhorst finished for his first varsity goal of the season.

Luebbert made 21 saves before Heimericks made his varsity debut in goal and added eight saves.

“We knew we were facing a very good opponent, and they challenged us in ways that exposed areas we need to improve,” Wibberg said. “While the result wasn’t what we wanted, games like this are valuable for our development.”

Fatima’s JV played a half against Fulton, with P. Berhorst, C. Berhorst, and Luebbert scoring. Luebbert finished with two goals, while Mendez, Dexter Moore, and Caleb Koenigsfeld recorded assists. Heimericks made nine saves.
