CHAMOIS — Chamois mayor Michael P. Edwards, 45, pleaded not guilty last week to a Class D felony charge of second-degree domestic assault after allegedly attacking his girlfriend on July 4.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Chris Morgan, the domestic assault was in progress when deputies responded in the early hours of July 4.
The PC statement noted the unidentified victim told deputies that “after figuring out about the affair,” she confronted Edwards. “While trying to take the phone away, the defendant tried to take (her) phone,” Morgan wrote. “While trying to take the phone away, the defendant grabbed (her) by the throat, choking and restraining (her) for approximately three minutes.”
Morgan wrote in his report that the victim “bit the defendant on the chest, allowing (her) to escape but not before getting punched in the mouth with a closed fist.”
Deputies confirmed the victim had a loose tooth from the attack, and bruising on her right arm and leg were consistent with her account of the assault, according to the PC statement. Photos of the bruising were taken by deputies.
Edward was booked at the Osage County Detention Center on a no-bond warrant.
He appeared before Judge Sonya Brandt, who amended the bond to $10,000 cash/surety with special conditions that he has no contact with the alleged victim or go near any place where the victim may be found. Edwards was ordered to reside with his parents. The case was continued to 10 a.m. on Aug. 1 for counsel status.
