Chamois track athletes continued their early-season development with strong performances at the Vienna Black & Gold Open on April 7 and the Vienna Junior High meet on April 9.
At the high school level, several athletes earned medal finishes in the team’s first major meet of the season.
Coach John Leach said the team came away with four medals and saw multiple personal-best performances.“They ran personal-bests because of the nice weather,” he said. “I’m very proud of all of them. As a team, we are starting to make strides in the events. We have work to do to be ready for districts.”
Carly Schollmeyer led the distance group with a third-place finish in the 3200-meter run (15:01.25), while Kaden Wuelling added a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (18.30).
Brayden Cotton turned in a strong showing in the field events, placing second in the shot put (42-8) and third in the discus (113-8).
Grayson Gerloff contributed a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (59.20), and the 4x200-meter relay team of Gerloff, Evert Mehmert, Wuelling, and Rex McKague placed fifth in 1:49.62.
Coach Leach said the team came away with four medals and saw multiple personal-best performances, noting the group is beginning to make strides as it builds toward district competition.
At the junior high level, Jaelyn Thoenen showed measurable improvement in her second meet of the season April 9 at Vienna.
Thoenen recorded personal bests in three events, placing 18th in the 100-meter dash (15.83), eighth in the 400 (1:20.83), and sixth in the long jump (3.52m). She also placed 18th in the 200-meter dash (35.31).
Coach Leach said Thoenen is “starting to know how to run these events” and expects continued improvement as she gains experience.
