Evelyn Allen 1930-2026

Posted

Evelyn Margaret (Fick) Allen was born to Alexander and Christine Fick on January 17, 1930, in Rich Fountain, Missouri. She was the second of four girls: Esther Lauberth, Elsie (Cotton) Epple, and Jo Ann Voss.

On June 6, 1953, she married Raymond Gerhardt Allen of Westphalia at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rich Fountain. In April of 1954, they welcomed their first child. In 1955, they moved to Cooper Landing, Alaska, where Raymond worked on the Sterling Highway between Cooper Landing and Soldotna. They later moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1957, where they welcomed nine more children. Evelyn was a traditional stay-at-home mom. She prepared hot dinners every evening, breakfasts each morning, and bagged lunches for school during the week, all while humming. One of her best-known talents was baking her famous chocolate chip cookies (the entire tabletop would be covered with them). Making sure her family was well fed was her main expression of love. They eventually moved back to Rich Fountain in 1987, to live in the farmhouse where Evelyn was born. The house sits on a knoll, with a creek running between the main road and the property. It was easy to see how that inspired one of her favorite sayings whenever she was asked about an upcoming event: “Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.” She lived in that farmhouse until the age of 89 and failing health forced her to move into an assisted living facility in Westphalia Hills, and later, into a nursing home in Columbia. She lived at The Neighborhoods by Tiger Place until her death in July of 2026.

As a devoted Catholic, she was always very involved in her church communities, St. Benedict’s in Anchorage, and Sacred Heart in Rich Fountain. She was an active member of the choir, baked pies and bread for the annual picnic, and was a dedicated member of the quilting circle, where the proceeds from the yearly quilt auction largely funded church operations.

Evelyn had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She made many trips back to Alaska, sometimes with her sister and best friend, Jo Ann. She also took many bus trips with her sisters, Cotton and Jo Ann, traveling to places like Chicago, Branson, Serpent Mound State Memorial in Ohio, and a John Deere plant in Illinois. For her 80th birthday, she was surprised with a trip to Mazatlán, Mexico, which became an annual tradition known as the “January Travel Club”.

Evelyn is survived by her son George Alexander, father of Nicole and Jason. Son Michael Lee, husband to Patty and parent of Daniel (Elizabeth). Daughter Christine Allen McNeese, wife to Steven and mother of Tyler and Tana. Son David Bruce. Daughter Carol Lynn Davis, mother of Rachel (Chris Carter), Brian (Jasmine), Matthew (Nicole), and Michelle (Aaron Creech). Son Joseph Edward, father of Samantha (Chris Schroeder), Jennifer (Vince Cook), Raymond, and Thomas. Daughter Catherine Allen Walatka, wife to Mark and mother of Megan (John Macy), Muriel and John. Daughter Canice Berke, mother of Allison and Kristin. Son Jesse James, father of Hillary. Sister Jo Ann Voss. And many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and a few great, great grandchildren.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Raymond G. Allen (1992), son Raymond Paul Allen (2002), son-in-law Paul Daniel Davis (2023), grandson Jason Allen (2020), great granddaughter Celestte Carter (2026) and sisters Esther Laubert (2025) and Elise Epple (2025).

Visitation starts at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24th at Sacred Heart Church, 4277 Highway U, Rich Fountain, Missouri. Funeral service is at 11:00 a.m with Fr. James Finder as celebrant, with food and fellowship to follow after burial.
