Fatima’s track teams combined to qualify 16 events for sectionals during district competition at Owensville in the Class 3, District 3 meet on Saturday.
The Comets placed fourth with 91 points, advancing athletes in 10 individual events and two relays.
Drew Riegel led the boys with district titles in both pole vault and javelin. He cleared 4.65m (15’3) in pole vault to set a new school record before adding a season-best throw of 45.77m to win the javelin. “Drew has had a great season and I think he’s in good position to represent Fatima at state,” said Coach Marc Bridges.
Grant Wilbers also had a strong day, advancing in three individual events and one relay. Wilbers finished second in the 300m hurdles (43.23), second (45.77m) in the javelin despite skipping his final three throws to focus on other events, and posted a season-best 16.50 to place fourth in the 110m hurdles.
“Grant will be very busy this week,” said Bridges.
Caden Rosentreter added a second-place finish in pole vault at 3.80m. “Caden is really starting to vault well and has a very good chance of advancing to state,” Bridges said.
Zach Kloeppel placed fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.49 to move on, while Michael Gabelsberger advanced in the 1600m run and Trenton Orscheln qualified in the 3200m run.
“The 4x400m and 4x800m relays will also compete at sectionals this week,” said Bridges. “The 4x800m of Kloeppel, Gabelsberger, Dake and Eisterhold have the better chance of the two relays to qualify for state.”
The Lady Comets finished eighth with 49.5 points, led by Brie Massman, who captured a district championship in the 800m run with a time of 2:25.15.
“Brie cruised to a district title to advance in the 800m run in hopes of defending last year’s state title,” said Bridges.
Maggie Peters also won a district title in pole vault after clearing 3.15m (10’4) to break her own school record for the third time this season.
Fatima’s girls relay teams also had success.
Melissa Verslues, Alex Berhorst, Avery Berhorst and Massman won the 4x800 relay in a season-best 10:14, while Addy Bower, Alex Berhorst, Avery Berhorst and Massman placed second in the 4x400 relay with a season-best 4:18.99.
“I feel pretty confident in all of the girls events to do what they need to at sectionals this week to make the move to state,” Bridges said.
