Fatima picked up three wins last weekend and finished third at the Southern Boone Classic.
“It was an up and down weekend, but getting three wins against Wright City, Eldon, and Moberly felt good,” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen. “Overall, the boys played quality baseball against some good teams.”
On Thursday, Fatima opened with a 2-1 win over Wright City.
The Comets got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after three straight batters reached base. Tommy Heisler (1-2) drew a lead-off walk, and Tanner Huhn (1-3, run) and Tyler Bexten (1-2, run) hit consecutive singles to load the bags.
Two batters later, Heisler was out at home on a Mason Bax fielder’s choice, and Huhn scored on the game’s only error. Bexten later scored on a passed ball.
Bryce Wieberg (1-2 at the plate) started the game and recorded 21 outs to earn. He gave up one earned run on six hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two.
Jackson Crede also had a single.
Fatima split two games on Friday, losing to Mexico, 16-4, and then defeating Eldon, 16-6.
The Comets scored a run in the first and three in the fourth but could not hold Mexico in a five-inning loss.
Colten Scheulen led the offense with a 3-3 day at the plate with a double, as Heisler drove in two runs on two hits. Crede (double, 2 RBI) and Bexten added a hit apiece.
Tristan Peters started the game and allowed eight earned runs on seven hits over two innings, with a strikeout and four walks. Heisler pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, with a strikeout and four walks, and in a third of an inning, Crede gave up one hit but no runs.
Fatima rebounded with a 10-run win over Eldon.
Wieberg (3-4, double) drove in four runs to lead the team, with a single in the second plating three, and a double in the sixth adding two more.
In the second, with Heisler aboard via a walk, Henry Robertson drew a two-out walk, and that got the ball rolling, so to speak. Crede (2-4, double, 2 RBI) singled to drive in Heisler, and Robertson came home on a wild pitch. Bax (2-2, 2 RBI) walked, and Wieberg hit his second single of the game. Crede scored on the throw to make it 4-1.
Fatima added two runs in the third, one run coming from a Bax single, the other on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Comets went on a tear, plating 10 runs to end the game.
Blake Kliethermes added two hits, while Heisler, Scheulen (triple), and Tony Heckman (RBI) each added a hit.
On the mound, Bexten allowed four earned runs on three hits, with three strikeouts and four walks over a three-inning start. Heckman closed the game with one earned run on four hits, with three walks.
Fatima defeated Moberly, 4-3, on Saturday.
Trailing 2-0, Fatima scored two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to claim the win.
Heisler (1-2) opened the fourth with a single and advanced on a sac by Bexten. With two outs, Heckman (2-3, RBI) doubled to drive in Heisler, and a hard-hit fly ball to left by Bax (1-3, RBI) drove in Heckman.
In the fifth, Wieberg led off with a HR, and the Comets used small ball to bring home the final run.
Crede posted two hits, as Scheulen added one.
Kliethermes notched the win after a complete-game effort that resulted in seven strikeouts and two walks as he allowed two earned runs on six hits.
Earlier in the week, the Comets defeated Licking 1-0.
Scheulen’s HR was one of Fatima’s three hits on the day, as Heisler and Bax added a single each.
Kliethermes struck out 11 over seven innings, shutting out Licking on four hits with two walks.
The JV Comets lost 6-5 after holding the lead late into the game. After talking a 4-3 advantage in the fourth, Licking answered with three in the top of the fifth.
Grant Kliethermes posted two hits and drove in one, as Eli Libbert (2 RBI) and Blake Schwartze (RBI), Sam Haller, Nico Bax, and Liam Morfeld each had a hit. Trent Stuckenschneider drove in one run as well. Stuckenschneider started the game and allowed three earned runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and a walk over three innings. Evan Koenigsfeld allowed three earned runs on three hits, with three strikeouts and four walks in two innings.
