Fatima went 0-3 last week as the Lady Comets ended the regular season at 14-12.
“That’s not the outcomes you hope for as you enter district play; however, there are positives to build on,” said Coach John Fick. “We had our opportunities, just couldn’t close the deal on Monday and Tuesday. The ladies took care of the basketball and had fewer than 10 turnovers in each of those games. We also shot a high free-throw percentage in those games. In close games, all it can take is one possession determine a win or a loss.”
Monday’s game came down to the final seconds, and Fatima had a chance to beat St. Elizabeth, but lost 57-56.
“We missed two free throws, got an offensive rebound, and missed the putback,” said Fick. “That’s how close it was at the end.”
Fatima led 35-29 at the break, but the third quarter allowed the Lady Hornets back into the contest. They won the frame 12-6, and then held a one-point advantage through the final stanza.
Alex Berhorst went 15-18 from the free throw line and scored 31 points, and her 10 rebounds gave her a double-double.

Wieberg and Alex Berhorst led with six rebounds apiece, as Wilbers added five, followed by Kleffner and Adalyn Berhorst (4 each), and Anna Struemph, Boyce, and Brune (2 apiece).
On the defensive end, Alex Berhorst counted six steals, Wieberg had four, and Wilbers pilfered two, as Wieberg added two blocks, and Adalyn Berhorst had another.
In Thursday’s road game, Jefferson City shot the lights out of the gym, making 11 three-pointers as a team, in a 65-33 win over the Lady Comets.

On the glass, Struemph grabbed four, Kleffner, Wilbers, and Boyce claimed three apiece, and Alex Berhorst and Jane Boyce finished with two each.
“The girls played with intensity, just as they have all season long; we just need a little touch around the rim,” said Fick. “They work their tails off to get open and to get to the rim, but seem to rush their shots and not finish the play. Things they’ve been practicing all year just didn’t fall our way. I hope they learned from these experiences and use them to make them better as we enter district play.”
The Lady Comets play on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Steelville.
