In Fatima’s final regular-season game on Thursday, the Comets played well but lost an eight-inning contest, 5-4, in eight innings.
“We played them well, and it was a good game to finish the regular season,” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen.
All of Fatima’s runs came in the fifth, capped by a three-run blast by Jackson Crede (2-4), his first of the year.
Tyler Bexten (2-4) drew a one-out walk and moved up on a sacrifice by Tony Heckman as he reached on an error. Mason Bax (1-3, RBI) followed with a single to center field to plate Bexten and set the stage for Crede, who delivered a line-drive shot to left field for a 4-1 lead.
Union scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game and force the extra inning. The contest ended on a passed ball that allowed Union to plate the scoring run.
Colten Scheulen added two singles, while Blake Kliethermes (double) and Tommy Heisler added a hit apiece.
Kliethermes started the game and pitched for one inning, allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout. Heckman went three innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. Heisler’s two innings of work ended with no runs or hits, with a strikeout and a walk. Crede faced eight batters over 1.1 innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits, with two walks.
In a makeup game last week, the Comets defeated Russellville, 9-0.
Bryce Wieberg and Bax led with two hits apiece, as Tanner Huhn, Bexten, Scheulen, and Heckman added a hit each.
On the mound, Wieberg tossed a six-inning shutout, allowing two hits while striking out five and walking three. In an inning of relief, Heisler struck out one and allowed no hits to complete the shutout.
