Fatima hits 4 HRs in win over Camdenton

Fatima rebounded from a tough loss to Fr. Tolton to beat Camdenton on Friday in a 7-2 game that featured four Comets’ home runs.

“This was a much better game for us all around,” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen. “Pitching was solid, and the defense showed up and had a couple of great catches, especially in the outfield. Hitting came alive. We put the ball in play hard, and the lineup did a good job of putting together good at-bats, making the pitcher work hard for all his outs.”

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Fatima saw Camdenton score a matching run in the second.

From there, however, the Comets kept pushing as Blake Kliethermes (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) hit a solo HR in the third for a 2-1 lead.

Tanner Huhn (2-3, 2 HR, 2 RBI) hit the first of two homers in the fourth, a solo smash to give Fatima a 3-1 edge.

Entering the bottom of the sixth, after Camdenton had scored its second run, Fatima went right back to work.

Huhn led off with his second round-tripper, and Tyler Bexten was hit by a pitch. That’s when Bryce Wieberg (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) sent the ball over the center-field fence for a two-run shot and a 6-2 lead.

Kliethermes earned a pass after being hit by a pitch, and Colten Scheulen (3-3, RBI) followed with a single. Tommy Heisler (2-4, RBI) kept it going with a line-drive single to center field to drive in Kliethermes to end the team’s scoring.

Jackson Crede also posted a single and scored a run.

Kliethermes claimed the win after a five-inning start in which he allowed just one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. In two innings of relief, Heisler struck out four and walked one while giving up no runs on three hits.

On Monday last week, the Comets fell to Father Tolton, 17-4.

“This was not a good defensive game at all,” said VanGerpen. “We had multiple errors mixed in with not catching routine fly balls to the outfield. Hitting was okay. We were able to get the bases loaded in a couple of innings, but never got the big hit to get us back in the game. Pitching looks worse on paper with the amount of runs given up, but actually, it was fine.”

Fatima scored a run in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, utilizing nine hits in the contest but struggling defensively with eight errors.

Crede, Heisler (RBI), and Scheulen (RBI) posted two hits apiece, while Evan Koenigsfeld (RBI) and Kliethermes (RBI) each had a double.

On the mound, Wieberg got the start and went four innings. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Trent Stuckenschneider entered the game in the final inning, allowing six earned runs on two hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.

The JV Comets defeated Tolton 8-6 in five innings.

Fatima struck first with a pair of runs in the first, but trailed 4-2 to start the second. From there, Fatima scored three in the second, and three more in the fourth, and two final runs in the fifth for the win.

Eli Libbert counted two doubles and an RBI as Blake Schwartze went 2-2 with a double and two RBI, and Liam Morfeld, Will Borgmeyer, Sam Haller, and Jack Wieberg (RBI) each added a single.

Tristan Peters started the game and, in two innings, allowed three earned runs on three hits, with two strikeouts and a walk. In his three-inning effort, Crede jammed seven and walked four while giving up no runs on no hits.
