In Fatima’s last regular-season softball game on Monday, the Lady Comets (12-13)defeated Montgomery County 6-1.

“We had a great week preparing for the postseason,” said Coach Ashlee Schnieders. “The girls have grown a lot and shown so much progress. They did a great job offensively and in the circle.”

After staking to a 1-0 lead in the first, Fatima added five in the fourth.

Alyssa Reichel (2-3, double) hit a two-out single with Ava Heckemeyer aboard with a walk. An error allowed Karley Schaben to reach, as Kinzie Haller (courtesy for Heckemeyer) scored. The floodgates opened a bit then, with Elise Dickneite (1-4, RBI) driving in Reichel with a single, and an error allowing Maci Wilbers to reach first base led to the fourth run. Rylie Wieberg (1-2, double, 3 RBI) drilled a single to left field for the final two.

Sadi Lehmen (double) and Emma Schwartze also had a hit.

Heckemeyer allowed one earned run on five hits, with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Schwartze closed out the game with one hit.

On Friday, the Lady Comets led early and overcame a late surge to fend off Eugene 8-7.

In the bottom of the second, Mindy Buscher (1-2) got the ball rolling with a single as the Lady Comets amassed five runs in the frame. Heckemeyer (1-2, double) followed with a double, and CR Haller entered after Lucy Warren drew a walk to load the bases. From there, Reichel (2-4, 2 RBI) singled to plate Buscher and Haller for a 2-0 lead.

Schaben walked to reload the bases, and Dickneite was hit by a pitch to drive in Warren. Lehmen (2-3, 2 RBI) also singled, and two more runs crossed home plate.

Eugene countered with a run in the third and six in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead, but the Lady Comets got a run back in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth, Dickneite (1-3, RBI) singled and then moved to second on a passed ball. After Lehmen was hit by a pitch, Wilbers (2-4) singled to load the bases for Wieberg (1-4, double, 2 RBI), who smashed a double to center field to put the Lady Comets ahead 8-7.

Heckemeyer’s 4.1-inning start resulted in three earned runs on six hits, with a strikeout and four walks. Wieberg closed the game, striking out three in 2.2 innings and allowing no hits.

On Wednesday of last week, the Lady Comets lost 13-3 to Helias.

Fatima scored a run in the third and two in the fourth. Dickneite (double, RBI) led with two hits, as Schaben (double), Warren (RBI), Lehmen, and Buscher added a hit apiece.

Heckemeyer started the game and in four innings, allowed four earned runs on eight hits, with a walk. In one inning of relief, Wieberg allowed four earned runs on four hits with a walk.

Fatima opened last week with an 11-6 win over Hallsville.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Lady Comets scored four to take the lead, then added four more in the fourth for an 8-2 advantage. After each team scored three in the fifth, Hallsville added one in the sixth.

A highlight of the game was Dickneite’s solo HR to lead off the fifth as she went 2-4 with two RBI. Wilbers (double, 4 RBI), Wieberg (double, 2 RBI), and Lehmen (double) added two hits apiece, and Reichel (RBI), Heckemeyer (RBI), and Schwartze posted one hit each.

Wieberg got the start and went five innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits, with a strikeout. Heckemeyer pitched two innings of relief, allowing one earned run on five hits, with a strikeout.
