Fatima traveled to Fair Grove on Saturday and returned with a win to start the day, and a loss to close it.
The Comets opened with a 15-3, 5-inning win over East Newton. “We took care of business,” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen. “The offense was putting together good at-bats, and we were up enough to sit starters early.”
Tristan Peters got his first varsity start on the mound and in two innings, allowed two earned runs on one hit, with two strikeouts and six walks. Tony Heckman closed it with one earned run on three hits over three innings, with seven strikeouts.
Fatima staked to a 5-1 lead after the first inning, and added six in the third and four in the fourth, taking advantage of nine hits and three errors.
Tanner Huhn and Tommy Heisler counted two hits and three RBI apiece, as Bryce Wieberg (double) and Colten Scheulen drove in three each on a hit apiece. Also collecting hits were Mason Bax (RBI) and Tyler Bexten, as Evan Koenigsfeld and Henry Robertson each drove in a run.
In the late game against Fair Grove, the Comets lost 7-1.
“They are a really good Class 3 team, and it showed,” said VanGerpen. “They hit the ball hard and found all the gaps. Our defense wasn’t as sharp, and our offense wasn’t able to pick us up like they’ve been doing, so the score got lopsided a little.”
Fatima trailed 5-0 before scoring its lone run in the fourth. Jackson Crede reached on an error and stole second. He scored on a sac fly by Blake Kliethermes.
The Comets recorded two hits in the game, a double by Wieberg and a single by Bexten.
