Fatima wins JC softball tournament again

Fatima is on a hot streak with an undefeated showing at the Jefferson City softball tournament following a win over Eugene last Thursday.

“The coaching staff is extremely proud of the way this team played last week,” said Coach Ashlee Schnieders as the Lady Comets outscored opponents 27-12 over four games. “We had some of the best offensive approaches we’ve seen all year from our girls, and they truly worked together to help lead us to success. Moving into the JC tourney, we knew we were going to have some tough games, and our pitchers stepped up and worked hard for us in the circle. This tournament was a big one for us last year, and this year, we still had some tough opponents. I think the number-one thing we succeeded in doing last weekend was keeping our competitive nature and composure. When tough teams score on you, you need to be able to respond, and we did just that, putting pressure on the defense to help us win games. Winning this tournament again shows the kind of talent and drive our girls have.”

In Saturday’s final game, Fatima defeated Hallsville 1-0 and won the hitting battle 6-3.

The only run came in the sixth after straight singles by Hannah Heisler (2-2), Mia Kliethermes (1-3), and Lily Cunningham (1-3) loaded the bases. Heisler scored on an error.

Kinzey Woody and Faith Jaegers also had a hit apiece.

Taylor Baumhoer claimed the win after a three-hit shutout in which she walked three and struck out five.

Fatima held off a late surge by Fr. Tolton to win 7-5 in Saturday’s early game.

Madelyn Backes went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI. Jaegers was 2-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Kristen Robertson added two hits with two RBI. Kaitlyn Plassmeyer finished with one hit.

Kliethermes struck out three and walked three in a 4.1-inning start while allowing three earned runs on four hits. In two-thirds of an inning, Baumhoer gave up two earned runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

In Friday’s late game, Fatima rolled to a 13-3 win in five over Capital City.

Woody (3-4, 4 RBI) drilled two home runs to tie Sammey Bunch for the career lead in home runs, and Heisler (1-2, 2 RBI) hit one as the Lady Comets amassed 16 hits in the game.

Jaegers added three hits, including a double and an RBI, as Kliethermes (2 RBI), Elise Dickneite, and Cunningham (RBI) added two hits apiece. Mindy Buscher and Backes each had a hit with an RBI.

Baumhoer started the contest and allowed no earned runs on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in four innings. Kliethermes pitched the last inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Fatima only collected five hits in Friday’s 6-4 win over Farmington, but that’s all the Lady Comets would need.

Jaegers (1-2) was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, Woody (1-3, 2 RBI) drew a walk, and Heisler reached on an error to load the bases without an out. From there, Kliethermes hit an RBI groundout to plate Jaegers, and another grounder resulted in an out for Cunningham (1-3, 3 RBI), who drove in Woody.

In the third, Jaegers was again hit by a pitch, and Heisler walked. With runners in scoring position, Cunningham singled to center to drive in both for a 4-3 lead.

Woody homered in the fourth with Jaegers aboard (single) to lead 6-4.

KP and Robertson each added a single.

Kleithermes allowed three earned runs on five hits in four innings, and Baumhoer closed the game with an earned run on two hits and one strikeout.

On Thursday, the Lady Comets defeated Eugene 10-0 on senior night.

“We were able to showcase those seven girls in the best way, and Taylor even came out with an amazing perfect game,” said Schnieders. “We are very lucky to have the opportunity to coach them.”

Baumhoer struck out 11 of the 18 batters she faced.

Offensively, Fatima plated five in the bottom of the second. Emerson Williams (2-3, RBI) doubled with one out to start the rally. Baumhoer (2-3, RBI) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Courtesy runner Megan Gabelsberger stole second and moved to third on a single by Avery Brandt (1-3, RBI).

KP (2-3, RBI) hit a bunt single to plate Gabelsberger, and Jaegers (1-4) doubled in KP, who had stolen second. Woody (2-3, 2 RBI) singled to drive in Jaegers, and Heisler (3-4, 2 doubles) used a double to push Woody to third. Kliethermes (1-2, RBI) followed with a single to score Woody, and Fatima led 5-0.

Fatima added two in the fourth and three in the sixth to end the game.
