Fatima’s boys’ team competed at the Richmond tournament on Saturday, with four earning top places.

“This was a good tournament to have right before districts,” said Coach Kurt Strope. “Each match we had gave us some challenges to learn from, and helped us improve as we move into the postseason next week.”

Caden Rosentreter (106) finished first after an undefeated run: Chase Stufflebean (Kirksville, TF, 17-0, 4:00), Will Knipmeyer (Lafayette County, fall, 0:21), Vincent Holsey (Excelsior Springs, fall, 0:15), and Hunter Wilson (Richmond, TF, 16-0, 3:40).

Jesse Schroeder (175) opened with wins against Cristian Bergman (Kirksville, MD, 15-3) and Landon Deyarmon (Benton, Dec, 6-2), and then fell to Gavin Reynolds (Father Tolton Regional Catholic, Dec, 5-2) in the first-place match to finish second.

Will Berhorst (113) finished fourth after falling to Raiden Sullivan (Richmond) in the third-place match (Dec, 4-1).

He defeated Zach Cunningham (Lafayette County, fall, 2:58) in the opening round and then lost to Athan Briggs (Father Tolton Regional Catholic, fall, 4:22) and knocked off Dallas Hurst (Richmond, Dec, 11-9) in the consolation semis.

Also earning fourth on Saturday was Tucker Schroeder (138), who lost to Martin Harrison (Father Tolton Regional Catholic, fall, 0:47) in the third-place match. After falling to Carson VanDoremalen (Excelsior Springs, TF, 18-3, 2:00) in the opening round, Schroder won the next two, beating Jared Dieckmann (Lafayette County, MD, 15-3) and  Charles Marshall (Palmyra, TF, 16-0, 2:49).

Harlan Deardeuff (190) lost to Landry Hays (Excelsior Springs) in the opening round (TF, 15-0, 4:33) and the first round of consolation (fall, 3:00).

“Harlan did not place but competed well, learning from his matches and continuing to improve each time he gets on the mat,” said Strope.

On Thursday, the teams travelled to South Callaway, where the Lady Comets went undefeated in duals as a team, and the boys split, defeating South Callaway (33-30) and losing to Owensville (54-24).

Zachary Kloeppel (150), Berhorst (113), and Deardeuff (190) won Fatima’s contested matches against SC.

In the Owensville dual, Tucker Tune (126) and J. Schroeder (175) won the two contested matches.

“The boys will see both Blair Oaks and South Callaway at districts,” said Strope. “It was good seeing them, and I think we should do fine when we see them again.”

The Lady Comets tied with the Dutchgirls (36-36) and defeated South Callaway (48-12).

In the Owensville match, Bailey Buschjost (155) defeated Aaliyah Taylor (fall), and Emillie Bonnot (190) beat Maci Armstrong (fall), while Elizabeth Meyer (125) lost by fall in contested matches.

In the SC dual, Renee Wilbers (120) defeated Hayden Watlington (fall), Meyer beat Michaela Smith (fall), and Heidi Struemph (130) knocked off Caroline Young (fall). Journey Markway (115) lost by fall to Katlyn Dickison.

On Tuesday, Fatima lost a nail-biter to Blair Oaks in a tie-breaker (36-36) as Nolan Laux (132) knocked off William Hake (fall, 0:13), while T. Schroeder and Deardeuff lost their matches.

Fatima lost to Washington (52-27), as Rosentreter, Berhorst, Nolan Laux (132), and Kloeppel won their respective contests.

“I like the way we competed,” said Strope. “We had good competition both nights, and the boys and girls were attacking and finding ways to win, and for the most part that worked out for us as a team.”
