LINN — Neal A. Johnson of Linn is the editor of the Unterrified Democrat. He’s also an award-winning photojournalist. He does more, though, than take pictures to cover the news and sports of Osage County. He uses his camera equipment for any and all services a client might want from a photographer. For almost 20 years, he’s been the proprietor of Johnson Productions, LLC. He shoots weddings, senior pictures, and other traditional photographic products.
Johnson, though, also cares about photography as art. His camera is more than a tool of his trade. It’s a medium through which he creates. Some of his best pieces will be featured in a display of his artistry at the Woodland Art Gallery at the Osage County Library, 22 Library Lane, from Wednesday, Oct. 4, to Friday, Nov. 30. A reception in Johnson’s honor is scheduled there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. Light refreshments will be served.
Johnson, 51, has been a professional photographer since 1997. Before the turn of the century, most photographers mastered the tools of the darkroom. Self-taught, he was as prolific as any journalist, developing and printing his photos and that of others. With the advent of digital photography, production exploded, allowing for a more efficient way to explore.
“I loved working in the darkroom, but it was limited,” said Johnson. “With digital cards, I could take as many photos as memory would allow.”
That applied mainly to sports, as Johnson usually takes 400-500 photos at an event.
“My photography career has focused mainly on sports action,” Johnson said, “but I love capturing nature scenes and taking on projects when time permits.”
