Fatima senior pitcher Blake Kliethermes pitched his first complete game of the year and gave up no runs in a 4-0 win over Eldon on Friday. He struck out 11 and walked four in the two-hitter.
“He threw well, and the offense put the ball in play hard and found enough holes to put up four runs” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen. “Our defense didn’t have too many tough plays. The boys competed well and put together a solid game.”
Fatima got around a walk and two singles in the top of the third, ending the frame on a great play at home. Trent Stuckenschneider made a solid throw from right field for an out at the plate to keep game scoreless. Catcher Colten Scheulen caught the ball with three steps to spare, easily tagging out the Eldon runner.
That stellar defensive stand created offensive momentum in the bottom of the inning. Tanner Huhn (2-2) led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. A groundout allowed him to score, and though Tommy Heisler (2-3, double, RBI) singled, he was stranded.
In the fifth, the Comets got it rolling again after Huhn sent the ball to center field on a line drive. He advanced to second on a Jackson Crede (1-3, RBI) single. Huhn came home on a Heisler double but Crede was held up at third, scoring on a Kliethermes sac fly to give Fatima a 3-0 lead.
The game’s final run came in the sixth when Tristan Peters (courtesy runner for Scheulen, who singled and went 1-3) scored on an error. To set the scene, Bryce Wibberg was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Peters moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a fielder’s choice with an error.
Kliethermes ended the game with a strikeout to open and close the seventh, working around two walks for the victory. He also added a single (1-3, RBI).
