JEFFERSON CITY — End their season with a state medal around their necks.

Track and field athletes from Chamois, Linn and Fatima had that aspiration over the weekend during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Track and Field Championships for Classes 1-3 at the Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex inside Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.

Osage County’s first medal came Friday afternoon during the Class 3 Boys Pole Vault.

Fatima’s Drew Riegel needed all three attempts on a pair of bars to keep himself in the hunt for the top eight.

Clearing 3.80 meters and 4.10m on his third attempt, Riegel’s clear at 4.10m helped him place eighth in the state.

“Drew has had a great year, improving from a personal best his freshman year of 10’6” to 13’5.25”,” Fatima head track coach Marcus Bridges said. “Drew broke his own school record at state by 1 cm. We couldn’t be more proud of Drew’s accomplishments this season and look forward to the next couple of years.”

Osage County’s next medal would have to wait until Saturday morning in the Class 3 Girls 4x800m relay.

Sitting in 10th place entering the final leg of the race, Brie Massman delivered a 2:25.65 anchor split bumping the Lady Comets back on to the medal stand after an eighth-place time of 10:18.56.

Joining Massman on the medal stand were fellow Lady Comets Lauren Berhorst, Addison Bower and Heidi Struemph.

“I could not have been any more proud of the race these girls ran,” Bridges said.

Fatima and Osage County’s final medal came later in day two during the Class 3 Boys 800m run.

Sitting 11th after the first lap, Fatima’s Tyler Kloeppel found another gear during lap two before crossing the finish line in a third-place time of 1:56.78.

“Tyler ran a great race, getting out in the first 400m in 58.45 seconds and closing with a 58.33 second split for the second 400m,” Bridges said. “I was a little concerned that Tyler’s incredible efforts in the 4x800 Friday may hamper his race on Saturday, but Tyler always comes up big in big races and he was ready to go on Saturday.”

Day one Friday saw Fatima and Chamois kick things off on the track in the boys 4x800m relay.

Fatima’s foursome of Michael Groene, Zachary Kloeppel, Michael Gabelsberger and Tyler Kloeppel just missed the medal stand after a ninth-place time of 8:12.45 in the Class 3 Boys race.

Chamois’ quartet of Caleb Keilholz, Kaden Wuelling, William Kirsch and Jaxon Wuelling placed 13th in 9:05.72.

Kaden Wuelling then competed in the Class 1 Boys 110m hurdles placing 14th overall in a time of 19.25.

Linn freshman Paige Loethen took her shot at the medal stand in the Class 2 Girls 1600m run.

Loethen ended her freshman season in the event with a 13th-place time of 5:53.38.

Caleb Keilholz also competed for the Pirates in the Class 1 Boys 3200m run registering a 10th-place time of 11:01.06.

Capping day one from Jefferson City was the Chamois boys 4x400m relay team of William Kirsch, Jaxon Wuelling, Kaden Wuelling and Caleb Keilholz placing 15th overall in a time of 3:53.12 during the prelims of the Class 1 Boys 4x400m relay.

Day two saw three more Osage County athletes compete in either the Class 3 Boys Javelin, Class 3 Girls 3200m run and the Class 1 Boys 800m run.

Fatima’s Easton Haslag just missed the podium with a ninth-place toss of 46.75m in the Class 3 Boys Javelin.

Berhorst also posted a 12th-place time of 12:24.14 in the Class 3 Girls 3200m run.

Jaxon Wuelling also took 14th place in the Class 1 Boys 800m run for Chamois in a time of 2:13.84.
