Lady Cats third at conference track

Linn’s girls track team finished third at Thursday’s conference meet at New Bloomfield.

“The conference meet is always a good one for the athletes to compete against those from area schools,” said Coach Robyn Baker. “We had some personal records and also some kids that ran events they hadn’t in the past. They competed well and showed us they are capable of being pushed a little.”

On the girls’ side, Linn was led by the first-place 1600m relay team of Hope Wolfe, Olivia Helmig, Kiana Hostetler, and Erika Platt (4:33). “The girls 1600m team was still on a high from their great race in Hermann on Tuesday and did even better at this meet,” said Baker. “They all ran really well, and Kiana had a last-minute push to win a photo-finish race. It was great to watch and be a part of as a spectator.”

The 3200m relay team of Annaliese Bowser, Hostetler, Platt, and Ramsie Tschappler won in 11:21. “They again ran a race that bettered each of their individual times and overall time,” said Baker. “They are working really hard to be competitive in districts, so this was a great race to push toward that.”

Coach Baker noted that Autumn Baker hasn’t been running the 200m dash much, but she continues to better her time and this meet earned All-Conference honors in third place (28.14).

“Kiana wasn’t initially excited about running 800 meters at the beginning of the season, but she has done a great job and is really learning how to run,” said Baker. “She and Erika tend to push each other in them, and it is fun to watch.”

Hostetler was third in 2:41.

Annaliese Bowser also ran the 800m event, finishing sixth in 2:55. “Though she didn’t medal, she had a time consistent with her relay time and seemed to enjoy running as much as throwing the javelin,” said Baker. “Ramsie continues to push in the 1600m run and this time earned an All-Conference medal (3, 6:22). I am so glad she is peaking at this point in the season.”

Courtney Wood made it to the finals in the discus with one of her best throws this season and finished 11th (21.29m). “She was a bit disappointed in her final throws, but I’m pleased she made it to that point,” said Baker.

On the boys’ side, Zach Dodson didn’t break a meet record, but he set a venue record for New Bloomfield and earned first place honors in the high jump (1.82m). “He was just short of that in pole vault (4, 3.2m), so we will have to try concentrating on both for districts,” said Baker.

Jason Powers had another good race in the 400m dash, earning third in 53.63 seconds. “He continues to cut seconds off his time and be pushed by the competition,” said Baker. “It is great to see this close to districts. In the javelin, he made it to the finals with one of his best throws this season.”

Trenton Burnett ran the 800m event for the first time this season, finishing fifth in 2:23. “He didn’t medal, but stayed competitive and didn’t give up through the whole thing,” Baker noted.
