Fatima held the Dutchgirls to just 25 points in Thursday’s win on the road.
“I think the girls’ defense really stepped up,” said Coach John Fick. “We did a decent job of keeping them off the boards and rebounding all game.”
Adalyn Berhorst (4-6 FT) led the way with 10 points. She hit the team’s only outside shot with a nice mid-range jumper. “We had open looks, just nothing went in,” said Fick. “I was glad to see the girls attack the basket more in the second half, draw some fouls, and get to the free-throw line.”
Fatima converted 12-19 from the stripe while Owensville had no FT attempts all game.
On the night, the Lady Comets shot 29.8% overall, but went 0-16 from three-point range.
Alex Berhorst (2-2 FT) added eight points, followed by Natalie Wilbers (6), Anna Struemph (3-4 FT), and Kacey Brune (3-4 FT) with five each, Jane Boyce (4), and Elise Dickneite (2).
Rebounding efforts were led by Adalyn Berhorst (6), as Casey Kleffner and Wilbers each snagged five, and Brune and Alex Berhorst finished with three apiece.
Defensively, Alex Berhorst and Struemph posted four steals apiece, Dickneite added three, and Wilbers, Rylie Wieberg, and Adalyn Berhorst posted two each. Brune had the team’s lone block.
On Tuesday of last week, the Lady Comets lost to Eldon, 52-46.
Fatima led by five with just over four minutes to play. “We couldn’t make a single shot to extend the lead,” said Fick. “They simply made buckets down the stretch to go ahead and ended up pulling away from us.”
The Lady Comets converted 7-30 from three-point range but shot 23.3% overall. From the stripe, Fatima was nearly perfect at 11-12.
Wilbers hit two treys and went 4-4 at the line to lead the team with 14 points, while Dickneite was perfect (3-3) from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the line for 11 points.
Adalyn Berhorst (trey, 2-2 FT) added seven points, followed by Kleffner (trey, 2-2 FT, 5), Alex Berhorst, Struemph, and Brune (2 apiece), and Wieberg (1). Wilbers also had a team-high three assists to go with two from Alex Berhorst, and one apiece from Wieberg and Adalyn Berhorst.
On the other end, Wilbers claimed four steals, Alex Berhorst had three, and Struemph, Kleffner, Boyce, and Adalyn Berhorst each added one. Brune also had a block.
