Fatima’s girls’ soccer team fell 4-2 in Thursday’s home match to California after a rainout earlier in the week against Osage, while continuing to show late-season growth heading toward district play.

California built an early advantage with three unanswered goals before Lauren Stuecken broke through for the Comets’ first score. The Pintos added their final goal just before halftime to take a 4-1 lead into the break.

Fatima responded in the second half with a stronger defensive effort, holding California scoreless over the final 40 minutes. Stuecken added her second goal of the match on an assist from Abby Rogers, who found her in space for a one-on-one opportunity that resulted in a deep-angle finish from the left side.

Caroline Nuebert recorded 17 saves in goal for the Comets.

“The team gained significant momentum late last week, fostering confidence at the individual player level and for the team as a whole,” Coach Kelley-Marie Wibberg said. “This is an opportune moment as they prepare for the upcoming challenges that come with district competition.”

Wibberg pointed to the team’s second-half performance as a sign of continued development despite late-season challenges. “The team demonstrated remarkable cohesion and performance in the second half,” she said. “Given the numerous late-season injuries, we have placed significant demands on our younger players to adapt to new positions. Each individual has responded to this challenge with exceptional professionalism and dedication to their colleagues.”

Wibberg highlighted several players for their contributions as Fatima continues to adjust its lineup.

“Our junior players have been instrumental in facilitating these lineup adjustments,” Wibberg said. “(Captain) Kacie Haller, for instance, has demonstrated exceptional versatility by excelling in every line on the field, setting a high standard for the entire team.”

Wibberg also credited team leadership and chemistry as key factors in navigating adversity.

“Carmen Falter, one of our captains, has been invaluable in training teammates for new roles, exhibiting remarkable patience and understanding while effectively coordinating efforts on the field,” Wibberg said. “Abby Rogers and (Captain) Lily Borgmeyer have been crucial in maintaining a positive and lighthearted atmosphere during challenging periods, which is particularly vital at this stage of the season.”

Wibberg added that younger players are beginning to settle into expanded roles. “Our new recruits are now truly beginning to flourish and gain confidence,” Wibberg said. “Alli Stephan is diligently working to master her core strengths, specifically in her ability to read the field and anticipate plays, enabling her to execute intelligent passes that initiate offensive strategies from the central position. Chloe Schaben consistently shines with her exceptional defensive tactics and growing striker skills. Even with less training as a striker, her grit and determination to contribute to the team’s success are always clear.”

Team captains echoed that confidence as Fatima prepares for postseason play.

“I feel like the team is excited to see new faces and some ones we have seen already this season,” Borgmeyer said. “We are ready to show off all the hard work and growth we made this season.”

Haller added, “We have some tough competition coming to wrap up the season. We have grown so much as a team, and now it’s time to show everyone how much we have changed since our first game.”
