BOLIVAR — Fatima’s girls cross country team won the Class 2 division Saturday at the SWCCCA meet in Bolivar, scoring 44 points in a race made more difficult by the heat.

Brie Massman led the Lady Comets with a second-place finish in 20:38, while Lexi Massman placed 10th in 21:38. Melissa Verslues was 11th in 22:23, and Chloe Voss took 17th in 23:17 as all four earned medals.

“Our girls had a good race in a crowded field,” Coach Marc Bridges said. “Temperatures made it tough to push paces, but our kids did a good job of managing the heat.”

Bridges was also pleased with the performances of Karly Bock and Zoey Wilbers. Claire Troesser completed her first 5K, while Journey Markway turned in what Bridges called a strong first race.

Other girls results were Bock (28th, 25:01), Wilbers (37th, 25:53), Rose Backes (41st, 26:07), Troesser (47th, 27:51), and Markway (56th, 30:43).

Avery Berhorst was forced to drop out about a mile into the race because of leg problems.

Fatima’s boys finished fourth with 121 points, led by Michael Gabelsberger, who placed third in 16:37 with an all-time personal best.

“Michael had an amazing race running an all-time personal best,” Bridges said. “The heat became a problem in the boys race, but a steady approach worked well for Michael, resulting in an amazing run.”

Trenton Orscheln battled the heat but finished as Fatima’s second runner, taking 26th in 19:21.

Freshmen Evan Kampeter and Austin Woehr also turned in strong performances in their first 5K races, while freshmen Conner Peters and Wyatt Kolb gained their first 5K experience in difficult conditions.

Other boys results were Kampeter (30th, 19:31), Woehr (35th, 19:47), Peters (51st, 21:35), and Kolb (52nd, 21:37).

Wyatt Dake and Tucker Schroeder were unable to finish because of the heat. Zack Eisterhold was held out as he continues recovering from leg issues.
