Lady Comets win Show-Me title for 13th straight year

Fatima’s girls’ cross-country team won the Show-Me Conference title for the 13th straight season in the conference’s final year. The team scored 20 points to beat Linn (51), New Bloomfield (70), and Russellville (97).

“Overall, I’m pleased with our girls’ efforts on a short week, with only a couple of days from our last race,” said Coach Marc Bridges. “We will get back to work this week in preparation for the Hancock Invitational at Jefferson Barracks.”

Brie Massman led the Lady Comets, claiming the individual conference champion crown in a time of 21:42 as Heidi Struemph finished second. (22:48), followed by Melissa Verslues (4, 23:57), Lily Gregory (8, 25:35), and  Skyla Schroeder (9, 25:52), as all five earned All-Conference honors. 

Next was Anna Rakestraw (12, 26:03), followed by Regan Bock (13, 26:06), Brianna Rademan (16, 26:55), and Addyson Wilbers (21, 27:40).

In the boys’ race, the Comets also dominated, with five in the top 10 as Fatima scored 21 points to beat New Bloomfield (50), Russellville (76), Chamois (97), and South Callaway (107).

Fatima’s team conference championship is the ninth consecutive and the first individual title for Cody Berhorst, who set the pace at 18:17.

Tyler Kloeppel was close behind for second place in 18:34, followed by Cody Kampeter (4, 18:48), Michael Groene (5, 18:56), Wyatt Dake (9, 19:36), Brady Hager (12, 20:08), and Zach Kloeppel (16, 20:39).

Trenton Kampeter won the JV race in 20:27 as teammates Trenton Orscheln (2, 22:37) and Harrison Stratman (5, 23:54) also earned All-Conference.

Meanwhile, Fatima’s JH girls’ team finished second with 44 points behind New Bloomfield (16).

Rose Backes earned All-Conference for her ninth-place run of 16:21, followed by Jaiden McCann (14, 17:30), Faith Peters (15, 17:33), Aliza Stratman (16, 17:37), and Chloe Schaben (18, 18:51).

On the boys’ side, Mason Huhn (7, 13:19) and Tucker Schroeder (9, 13:37) earned All-Conference honors.

“I’m proud of the way our kids ran in their final race of the middle school season,” said Bridges. “Rose, Mason, and Tucker all set out to earn All-Conference and did what was necessary to accomplish their goal. Jaiden, Faith, Aliza, and Chloe also had their best races of the season. We had a lot of fun this season and saw these runners improve each week.”
