Marie Dorothy Hackmann, 101, Chamois, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at StoneBridge Westphalia, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov. 7, 1921, to the late William “Bill” and Mamie (Boss) Schollmeyer in Chamois.

She was united in marriage to Alfred Joseph Hackmann Feb. 3, 1942, at Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison.

Marie attended school in Morrison through the eighth grade.

She worked at a garment factory in Chamois until 1947.

Marie took great pride in raising her four children and taking care of her home. In her younger years, she enjoyed gardening and farm work at her home. Marie also loved dancing and went out with her friends nearly every weekend to attend dances. Polka dancing was her favorite, whether she attended or watched them on television. When her children were young, Marie was often with them in the yard hitting pop flies, grounders, and playing catch.

She was a crafty and creative woman who especially enjoyed ceramic crafts, crocheting, quilting and woodworking. Her family would say that she stretched the word “carpenter” as far as she could. Marie loved shopping, mostly for clothing or at hardware stores. Those who knew her knew that her most favorite color was purple. Marie enjoyed an occasional beer, ice cream and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all, she loved her family fiercely and will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Marie was preceded in death by parents, William and Mamie; and husband, Alfred.

She is survived by children, Dale Hackmann and wife Lana, Donna Backes and husband Richard, Sherry Backes and husband Ken and Betty Roden and husband Conn; 13 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 29, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Chamois with Fr. David Means officiating. Interment was next to her husband at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Morrison.

Memorial contributions suggested to Assumption Catholic Cemetery or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements enrusted to Millard Family Chapels in Chamois.
