There is a new library sign in Bourbon. It is beautiful, very tall with barrels, and constructed to stay, in concrete and with lighting available. This sign cost taxpayers $5,500. The Bourbon library is housed in the Community Center and rents that space. The Community Center relies on this rental and this arrangement is mutually beneficial. It benefits the community as well because it is centrally located in Bourbon.
This sign may be an issue. The problem is that the sign was installed without the community center’s knowledge or approval. Another issue is the size, which makes it seem out of place. The sign that had been used seemed appropriate and sufficient and worked with the overall appearance. The new sign also violates the contractual agreement which limited the size.
The community center board and the library board met to discuss the situation on September 18. The community center was very gracious in this meeting discussing the issue. They will be in contact with their recommendations.
The actions of the Library Board, installing the sign without the approval of the community center is certainly troubling, the amount of taxpayer’s money, $5500, seems frivolous.
The only oversight on the expenditures of the library is the library board. Ultimately they are responsible. The library board meets on the second Monday of the month at 10 a.m. in Steelville. Meetings are open to the public.
