OSAGE COUNTY — Westphalia Fire Protection District Chief Jim Roark and his crews responded to a fire on Sunday that destroyed several outbuildings at a farm in Folk.
While he’s not sure of the cause of the fire, one of the contributing factors was severely dry grass.
“It’s dangerously dry,” he said. “Once it started, it spread very quickly.”
Crews from Westphalia, Linn, Argyle, and Meta responded to the blaze, which started at about 1 p.m. Roark said the scene wasn’t cleared until 10 p.m.
That incident served as motivation to postpone fireworks shows in the area.
The city of Westphalia, along with Freeburg and Meta, have postponed this weekend’s Fourth of July fireworks shows until rain mitigates the danger. No makeup dates have been set.
Everyone is encouraged to refrain from burning materials or setting off personal fireworks as well.
