FRANKENSTEIN — The newly restored Smith Family Cemetery recently became the site of its first burial in nearly half a century.
Kevin Smith, 66, of Blue Springs — the great-great-great-grandson of Uriah S. Smith (1785–1870) — was laid to rest Nov. 3 in a private family service officiated by Rev. David Means of Chamois.
Attending with other relatives were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Smith of Belton, and Floyd’s cousin, Shirley Smith Nolte of Chamois.
Burial in the family cemetery is available to other relatives at no charge, and visits are welcome.
The 10-year restoration project has seen nearly all tombstones repaired and a new gate installed. The grounds are meticulously cared for by Russell Troesser, who owns the surrounding farmland.
Donations to continue the restoration may be sent to Smith Family Cemetery Trustee Michael (Smith) Nolte at michaeljnolte@gmail.com or by phone at 913-522-7610.
