LINN — State Tech is taking steps to build Agriculture Programs by acquiring several local farms and adjacent properties.
State Tech received an Agriculture Innovation & Workforce Development ARPA Grant for $2 million earlier this year. Last week, State Tech closed on the Gary and Barbara Maasen farm one mile south of campus.
On May 15, the college will close on the Michael Morton and Herndon Hills properties adjacent to the property recently acquired in a swap with Osage Ambulance. In addition, State Tech has purchase contracts on two acres owned by Dennis Sallin and seven acres owned by the city of Linn. The combined properties amount to 344 acres.
“We are thrilled to be able to acquire property so close to campus,” said State Tech President Dr. Shawn Strong. “In all cases, the families mentioned a connection to State Tech or the Linn R-2 School where State Tech began.”
State Tech will begin a master planning process for the properties. The Agriculture Innovation grant requires State Tech to match funds that must be spent before the end of the fiscal year on July 1.
