LINN — Alex M. Stieffermann, 33, listed as homeless by the Osage County Sheriff’s Office, was charged last week with first-degree motor vehicle tampering and second-degree burglary following the alleged theft of a 2021 red Toyota Corolla from the State Tech Vehicle Power Center at approximately 2:16 a.m. on Thursday.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Ben Sallin, State Tech contacted the sheriff about the theft.
The reporting party told Sallin that an individual — later identified by deputies as Stieffermann — was observed entering the automotive side of the Vehicle Power Center at approximately 12:34 a.m. Video surveillance shows the vehicle leaving the property. No one else was seen on camera entering the building; likewise, no one was observed leaving the building.
Deputy Sallin watched the video and confirmed the statement made by the reporting party.
Stieffermann was arrested on June 22 for first-degree motor vehicle tampering and was free on bond. Sallin appealed to the prosecutor, noting in his statement that the defendant is at risk of not appearing on a summons because he’s homeless.
Stieffermann has a prior conviction for felony theft on June 13, 2012, and a conviction for second-degree burglary (SIS) on Feb. 10, 2021. However, the court revoked the defendant’s probation for misdemeanor theft, with a conviction on Oct. 25, 2021.
Stieffermann is being held at the Osage County Detention Center on a no-bond arrest warrant.
