Wildcats show marked improvement at home invitational

Linn runners took advantage of cooler conditions and their home course Saturday as the Wildcats showed substantial improvement throughout the lineup at the 48th annual Linn Cross Country Invitational.

“I felt so much pride seeing our athletes put out the effort needed throughout the week and then seeing it make such a huge impact on their running,” said Coach Tasha Haslag. “The weather definitely helped our runners show what they are capable of.”

The Lady Wildcats produced some of the biggest gains from the previous week’s meet at New Haven. Kylie Messenger cut more than five minutes from her time, while seniors Elyse Brandt and Adalyn Brandt each improved by more than four minutes. Lily Baker improved by more than a minute, and Allie Hackmann and Enslee Stevenson recorded personal-best performances.

Linn finished seventh as a team with 149 points, with the following individual results: L. Baker (37, 27:14.10), Messenger (42, 27:21.81), E. Brandt (52, 28:35.91), A. Brandt (53, 28:39.96), Hackmann (63, 31:28.14), Stevenson (80, 37:10.80).

The varsity boys also made significant strides. Jackson Hamburg improved by more than 2.5 minutes from New Haven (32, 20:22.41), Vince Tschappler cut more than 1.5 minutes (61, 22:53.51), Emmit Mehmert (81, 25:09.66) lowered his time by more than four and a half minutes, and Samuel Heckman also improved from the previous meet, finishing in 29:44.15 for 93rd.

Saturday’s meet also required a considerable effort away from the course, and Haslag praised the athletes and families who helped Linn host the event.

“Hosting a home meet is so much more work than most people ever see, and I was incredibly impressed with how our athletes and parents stepped up to make sure we hosted the best meet possible,” Haslag said.

Linn’s middle school runners continued gaining race experience, with Thatcher Gray, Collin Kempker (116, 19:20.79), Jagger Maasen (123, 22:07.06), Grace Hall (79, 18:46.29), and Daphne Baker (84, 19:11.32) recording personal-best performances.

Jaedyn Theissen rounded out the girls’ squad with a 93rd-place time of 19:52.86, and for the boys: Landon Engelhardt (41, 14:22.13), Gray (47, 14:35.19).
