Argyle trustees talk car show

Argyle trustees at their May 20 meeting further discussed issues with the Knights of Columbus car show scheduled for Aug. 8.
Event organizer Dustin Otto had expressed his concern to trustees that he was unfairly targeted in a newspaper article that he felt blamed him for the after-hour misbehavior by some of the car show entrants.
Village Clerk Kym Brunnert said Trustee Ryan Davis had put the item on the agenda and had planned to address it but he was unable to attend this meeting.
Trustee Felicia Wieberg said her understanding of Otto’s position is that he is only the event organizer, and the event ends at 4 p.m. with burnouts occurring after last year’s show had ended.
Otto was asked to reiterate to car show entrants that burnouts will not be tolerated.
Otto noted there is no registration. Kym Brunnert acknowledged that she did not know how it all works, but added that “(entrants) do pay and I think they sign something.”
Otto was assured that trustees were fine with the car show moving forward, but everyone has to be aware that no peeling out is allowed. It was noted that flyers for the event specifically read “no burnouts.”
“We can do without this car show,” said Trustee Ronnie Brunnert. “I know they are making money off this.”
Wieberg said she was not even sure they are going to continue with it. In her conversation with Otto, he said they were planning to talk about it at the next K of C meeting. “They might end up canceling it since a lot of the members are angry,” she said.
“There are a lot of people around town here who are angry about their car show,” Ronnie Brunnert responded. “I know several people who mark it down on their calendars as the weekend to leave town. They don’t want to be around it.
“They would have you believe all this goes on after the car show is over, but that’s wrong,” he continued. “The burnoffs go on all day long. I don’t want to hear that.”
“It does start in the daytime,” Kym Brunnert agreed. “If they decide to continue with the car show, we just have to be more aware of what is going on.”
Wieberg has a friend, who is a state trooper, who will be cruising through Argyle that day.
“Everybody be on their best behavior that day or it will never happen again,” Ronnine Brunnert said.
“It will be the last one,” Kym Brunnert agreed.
Wieberg questioned whether the K of C had officially asked permission, saying she did not remember it.
“Yes, they did,” Kym Brunnert replied.
“The more he raises a stink about this deal, the more publicity this thing gets,” said Ronnie Brunnert. “Then you have idiots down there trying to prove a point.”
The previous article mentioned a car on fire, which was confirmed by Ronnie Brunnert. “They went up T road, then in front of my house, and then came back down and stopped right there and his car was on fire,“ he said, adding there was also a Jeep with the top off performing risky maneuvers with two adults and two kids in the back seat.
“I am afraid someone is going to get hurt,” said Kym Brunnert.
Reached for comment later, Davis said that he felt the majority of the peeling out and rambunctious behavior occurred after the car show had finished up and was not due to the actions of the participants in the car show.
Otto did not respond to a request for comment from the U.D.
In other news, action was tabled until next month on a lawn-mowing bid. Kym Brunnert reported the only bid received was from her husband, Tom. His bid was $40 per cut when needed. The previous person charged $35 per cut and cut an average of three times each month. A decision was delayed until the June meeting since Kym Brunnert plans to abstain from the vote.
* Ronnie Brunnert said he recently talked with Scotty Reichel about filling some potholes. Reichel said they should wait until it is a little warmer.
“Are we thinking about having some streets repaved?” Ronnie Brunnert asked.
Kym Brunnert said Mayor Chris Brundick has worked hard to see if the church will go in on the cost. “We still have the bid,” she said. “We can’t wait for the church.”
Further discussion was tabled until next month’s meeting.
* Kym Brunnert reported a current balance of $63,865.98 in the village money market account. The sewer account has a balance of $29,998.75 and the sewer payment account totals $5,616.46. Argyle’s general account presently contains $40,247.57. Deposits totaled $1,762.20 and payments were made in the amount of $2,571.87.
