Changes are good for Linn track

Linn track coach Robyn Baker tried a few new things at Friday’s South Callaway Invitational, which led to a fifth-place finish for the girls.

“We made a few tweaks to the events our athletes competed in at this meet, and several of them worked out well,” said Baker.

On the girls’ side Hope Wolfe joined Olivia Helmig, Erika Platt and Kiana Hostetler in the 4x400 relay and the girls had a great race, winning in 4:41.

“Annaliese Bowser has been running the third leg, and doing a good job, but Hope was able to give them just a little more push at this meet,” said Baker. “Kiana had a great anchor leg and brought the team from third place to first. It was a great race to watch.”

Grace Wagner got a little more practice in the 300m hurdles this week, and it paid off as she finished eighth and broke the one-minute mark, which had been her goal from the beginning. Helmig really likes to pole vault at South Callaway, and she performed well again, clearing 8-6 for fourth place. “She continues to look stronger each meet,” said Baker.

Courtney Wood didn’t medal in discus, but she had really good throw and earned a point for the team, finishing eighth (23.34m). She also had a personal record in the shot put (18, 7.09m). “I’m excited for her to start excelling as we reach the halfway point of the season,” said Baker.

Autumn Baker ran the 200m dash for the second time this season and brought her time down (28.23) to earn a fourth-place medal.

Linn’s boys also had a few changes and performed well.

Tyler Wagner was in the open 100m (17, 12.50) and 200m (10, 25.81), and though he didn’t medal in either, he ran good times to be able to build on for the next meet.

Carson Kliethermes has been doing well in the long jump (15, 4.68m), so he tried the triple jump (10, 10.29m). “He showed great potential and I look forward to seeing him continue to improve,” said Baker.

The boys 1600m relay team of Wagner, Zach Dodson, Cameron Hoelscher and Jason Powers placed fifth and ran their best time thus far (3.50). “They are really starting to work well together, and Jason continues to be a great anchor leg for this team,” said Baker.
