Gerald Albert “Jerry” Ferguson, 79, Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 16, 1944, to Elbert David and Viola Leona (Giesing) Ferguson.

He was united in marriage to Teresa Marie Kliethermes July 27, 1968, in Taos.

Jerry, a lifelong resident of central Missouri, graduated from Chamois High School in 1962. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve in the U. S. Army, proudly dedicating himself to his country during the Vietnam conflict. Honorably discharged July 20, 1967, with the rank of SP5, Jerry’s commitment to service extended beyond the military.

His dedication to community safety led him to become a firefighter for the Jefferson City Fire Department, where he served as a driver for 25 years until retiring Feb. 1, 1998. In addition to Jerry’s  firefighting career, he worked for the State of Missouri, Farmers Concrete and Coleman Appliance.

Jerry (“Fergie”) was a proud member of the American Legion Post 5 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles where he found solace and camaraderie among his fellow veterans.

His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and hunting quail, squirrels and deer. In his earlier years, Jerry enjoyed playing cards with friends, spending time on his farm, and visiting casinos. Notably, he had a unique relationship with the Christmas season. Despite his dislike for the holiday, Jerry’s sister Verda would sneakily decorate his yard at night, providing him with a surprise in the morning. This playful tradition added a touch of humor to Jerry’s life.

Despite facing life’s challenges, he approached them with resilience and a patient demeanor. As a dedicated provider for his family, he will be fondly remembered for his hard work and caring nature. Jerry’s impact will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
