Margaret A. Schaefer, 89, Linn, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, at Westphalia Hills.

She was born Feb. 28, 1934, to the late Charles and Mary (Backes) Haslag in Loose Creek.

She attended school in Loose Creek and was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Westphalia. 

Margaret was united in marriage to Herbert M. Schaefer on May 14, 1955, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek. 

She was employed for the state of Missouri in the Department of Social Services as a case worker before working in the cafeteria at St. George Parish School for 34 1/2 years retiring in January of 2003.

Margaret was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Linn, St. Ann’s Sodality and the Catholic Knights. 

She  enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, gardening, canning, going to the casino, cooking, baking, playing cards, Dominoes, Bingo and going on trips with her husband, Herb.  Margaret’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family who was her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Herb; parents, Charles and Mary; sisters, Anna Niekamp and husband Ray, Frances Niekamp and husband Albert, Angela Eads and husband Bill and Sister Alice Haslag, O.S.S.R.; brothers, Clarence Haslag and wife Esther and infant Alfred Haslag; daughter-in-law, Margie Schaefer; brothers-in-law, Joe Schafer and wife Ida and Bill Schaefer and wife Alice, and sisters-in-law, Loretta Coffman and husband Ed and Leona Bret and husband Elmo.

Margaret is survived by sons, Ronald “Ron” Schaefer and wife Phyllis of Portland, Ralph Schaefer and wife Carol of Loose Creek, Richard Schaefer and wife Joan of  Taos, Russell Schaefer and friend Kimberly Schubert of Taos and Roderick “Rod” Schaefer and wife Rosa of Linn; grandchildren, Holly Schaefer, Jennifer Cross and husband Jared, Laura Schaefer, Justin Schaefer and wife Erin, Christy Burton and husband Spencer and Emma and Gracie Schaefer; step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Schmidt and husband William, Tom and Tim David and Brad and Lauren Wilson; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and  many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., (today) Wednesday, Sept. 20, and at Morton Chapel in Linn. An additional visitation will be held  Thursday, Sept. 21, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.,with Fr. Colin Franklin officiating. Interment will be in the St. George Parish Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions suggested to St. George Parish Cemetery or for Masses.
