ST. ELIZABETH — One more conference title.

Fatima’s baseball Comets were looking for one last Show-Me Conference title Thursday on the road in St. Elizabeth against the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) Class 1 top-ranked Hornets.

After seven innings of scoreless baseball, extra frames were needed to determine if Fatima would win the outright Show-Me Conference title or if would be a three-way tie between the Comets, Hornets and Eugene’s Eagles.

In Fatima’s half of the eighth inning, the Comets turned two walks, two hits, two hit batters and an error into six runs and a 6-0 victory with Bryce Wieberg earning the win in relief of Fatima starting pitcher Blake Kliethermes.

Both teams had scoring chances in their respective halves of the first inning.

St. Elizabeth left two runners on base giving the Comets a chance to grab the early lead in the bottom half of the first inning.

Glenn Berhorst was hit by a pitch with one out before an Easton Stuckenschneider single put two runners on with only one out.

Two strikeouts ended the Fatima threat keeping the game scoreless after one inning.

Kliethermes pitched around a pair of walks over the next two innings helping the Comets keep the Hornets off the scoreboard through three innings.

Stuckenschneider had two more hits for Fatima in the fourth and sixth innings before being left stranded in what continued to be a scoreless game.

Able to overcome a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wieberg struck out two Hornet batters to send the game into extra innings.

Fatima started their eighth-inning onslaught with Graham Boeckmann being hit by a pitch before Wieberg reached on an error.

A Berhorst RBI double scoring Boeckmann broke the scoreless tie leading to five more Comet runs.

Stuckenschneider walked loading the bases for Matt Stuecken who drew a free pass forcing in Wieberg.

Cody Schwartze was then hit by a pitch allowing Berhorst to score.

Stuckenschneider then scored on a wild pitch before Kliethermes delivered the blow of the inning on a two-RBI single.

Monday night at South Callaway High School in Mokane, Fatima overcame weather delays totaling an hour before posting a 9-2 victory in their Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 8 semifinal game with New Bloomfield’s Wildcats.

Monday’s other semifinal game between North and South Callaway was postponed to yesterday (Tuesday) due to inclement weather.

As it stands now, Fatima will face the winner of North and South Callaway today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m., in Mokane weather and field conditions permitting.
