Chamois cross country runners tested themselves against large, fast fields Saturday at the Brian T. Simpson meet at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, just four days after all three Pirates earned All-Conference medals at the Show-Me Conference meet in Vienna.
At the Simpson meet, Grayson Gerloff finished 121st in the varsity boys race with a time of 20:57.10, while Carly Schollmeyer placed 95th in the varsity girls race in 26:11.40 and Emma Mehmert was 43rd in 26:24.51. The meet featured 233 runners in the varsity boys race and 149 in the varsity girls race.
Chamois coach John Leach said the competition at Gans Creek provided a demanding test for his runners.
“It was a very fast field at the Brian Simpson meet at Gans Creek in Columbia,” Leach said. “It was a little warm, so I hope the next time we run on that course it will be cooler for the runners.”
Leach said the Chamois trio handled the competition well and hopes they earn an opportunity to return to Gans Creek next month.
“The runners from Chamois did a pretty good job on that course,” Leach said. “I am hoping that all three get a second time on that course in November at the State Championship to improve their own time.”
The meet followed a strong showing Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Show-Me Conference meet in Vienna, where all three Chamois runners earned All-Conference medals. Schollmeyer led the Chamois girls with a fifth-place finish in 25:09.50, Mehmert placed seventh in 26:13.50 and Gerloff finished sixth in the boys race in 20:02.70.
The medals continued lengthy All-Conference streaks for each runner. Schollmeyer has earned an All-Conference medal five consecutive years, Gerloff has earned the honor four straight years and Mehmert has received an All-Conference medal in four of the last five years.
“The kids grabbed three All-Conference medals and did a great job at the meet,” Leach said. “I am very proud of all of them.”
