Walter Schubert, 81, Jefferson City passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021, at his home.
He was born Feb. 1, 1940, to the late Alexander and Elsa (Fiebich) Schubert in Oberstdorf, Germany.
He was united in marriage to Antoinette “Toni” Soteros May 27, 1967.
Walter was a 1960 graduate of East St. Louis High School and then went on to attend Southern Illinois University, as well as banking school.
He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1961 to 1967.
Walter was employed at Roosevelt Federal Savings and Loan from 1962 to 1968, North St. Louis Times and the City Bank of St. Louis. After moving to Meta, he and his wife became partners in ownership of Meta State Bank (now Mid-America Bank) from 1970 to 1977 where he continued to work for 10 more years. In November 1987, Walter purchased the United Security Bank of Auxvasse where he served as President and Chairman of the Board until present.
He was on the Meta State Bank and Mid-America Bank Board of Directors from 1970 to 1998, the Fulton Area Development Corp. and the Chamber of Commerce of Fulton. Walter was a member of the Missouri Independent Bankers Association, served on the board of the Special Learning Center, treasurer at St. John’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Auxvasse Lion’s Club.
Aside from all of his accomplishments with the bank, Walter’s greatest achievement was his family. There was no place he would rather be than with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the great outdoors. Walter was known as the “candy man”, always having a stash of candy in his pockets for his grandchildren or kids coming into the bank. On Saturday mornings you could catch him delivering pancakes or donuts to his grandchildren, and now, great-grandchildren. Some of Walter’s favorite places included his family farm in Meta, his “home away from home” in Florida and his peaceful lake house. He was very proud of his family, and will be missed by them greatly.
He was preceded in death by parents, Alexander and Elsa; and mother-in-law, Isabella Soteros.
Walter is survived by loving wife of 54 years, Toni; son, Kurt Schubert and wife Katrinia of Jefferson City; grandchildren, Tyler Schubert and wife Jenna, Makenzie Wolfe and husband Andrew, Austin Schubert and wife Kayla and Elijah Sherwood; great-grandchildren, Liv, Declan, Lux and Daxton Schubert, and Dakota, Leo and Miles Wolfe; great-grandbaby number eight due in October; and sister, Erika Schubert.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 27, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Schubert. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial contributions suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Arrangements entrusted to Houser-Millard Funeral Home in Jefferson City.
