Chamois battles Calvary, Tipton over break

Chamois played a tough Calvary Lutheran squad on Friday, and Coach Parker Jett is pleased with the effort despite a 62-28 loss.

“Top marks and respect for the group we played against,” he said. “It was not a great showing from us on either end of the floor, but our group is determined to improve and learn from it.”

Trailing 31-9 at the half, the Pirates scored 11 in the third and eight in the fourth, finishing with a 21.2% shooting mark from the field. Chamois covered two three-point attempts and went 12-20 from the stripe.

Jaxon Wuelling led the team with 17 points, including a 7-10 performance at the line, and accounted for both three-pointers. Brayden Cotton added six (2-4 FT), Max McKague (3-6 FT) added three points, and Kaden Wuelling finished with two.

J. Wuelling grabbed four rebounds, Cotton added three, K. Wuelling and Oliver Carter each had two, and Levi Weed and McKague posted one apiece.

On Tuesday of last week, the Pirates lost to Tipton JV, 42-36.

“We defended really well as a team; we just could not get it going offensively,” said Jett. “We’re continuing to improve, and that’s all I can ask for.”

The big difference came in the third quarter when the Pirates scored five points to trail 32-25. Chamois played very close to Tipton through the first half with a 22-20 score. Facing a seven-point deficit entering the fourth, Chamois won the final frame 11-10 but couldn’t make up enough ground.

On the night, the Pirates shot 25% from the floor, sinking two three-pointers and going 12-20 from the FT line.

J. Wuelling hit both long-range shots and went 8-8 at the line, finishing with a team-high 18 points. Carter added nine, Grayson Gerloff put in four, and Weed scored one.

On the glass, K. Wuelling secured 10 rebounds, and Carter grabbed seven, followed by Gerloff (5), Victor Slack and McKague (4 each), and Weed (1).

Defensively, Carter had two blocks as Slack and McKague claimed one apiece. K. Wuelling’s four steals paced the team, followed by Gerloff (3), McKague, and J. Wuelling (2 each), and Weed and Slack (1 apiece).
