On Friday, Dec. 19, the Chamois Pirates lost to Vienna, 55-18, but Coach Parker Jett is taking it one game at a time.
“It’s a long season,” he said. “We are continuing to improve every day, and we didn’t play well. I’m proud of my group being committed to improving and building on that. There’s always something we can learn from any result.”
Jaxon Wuelling hit a trey and went 3-4 from the FT line to score 10 points, as Oliver Carter added four, Victor Slack posted two, and Levi Weed finished with one. Kaden Wuelling and Grayson Gerloff counted two assists each, and J. Wuelling had another.
On the glass, Carter grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and K. Wuelling added seven, followed by J. Wuelling (6), Weed and Gerloff (3 each), and Slack (1).
Defensively, J. Wuelling posted a steal and block; K. Wuelling also had a steal, while Weed, Gerloff, and Max McKague had a block each.
In their Dec. 16 game against New Bloomfield, the Pirates claimed a 58-43 win on the road.
“The group played and shot well,” said Jett. “We got a great game from Brayden (Cotton). He really took over in the second half offensively, and as a group, we defended very well to end the game.”
Cotton blew up for 35 points, hitting 14-29 from the short floor, 3-10 from three-point range, and 4-5 from the FT line.
After taking a 17-16 first-quarter lead, the Pirates extended their advantage to 32-28 by halftime.
The game was still relatively close entering the fourth, but Chamois slammed the door with a 14-6 edge to claim victory.
Overall, the Pirates shot 41.5% from the field, with three treys, and an 11-16 performance at the stripe.
J. Wuelling (3-4 FT) also reached double figures with 13 points, as K. Wuelling and McKague scored three apiece, and Carter and Weed put in two each. J. Wuelling and McKague led with three assists apiece, and K. Wuelling and Gerloff each dished the ball twice.
Rebounding efforts were led by Cotton’s six boards as J. Wuelling, K. Wuelling, and McKague grabbed four apiece, Carter had three, and Weed finished with one.
On the defensive end, K. Wuelling and J. Wuelling counted four steals each, Gerloff and McKague added two apiece, and Weed, Cotton, and Carter posted one each. Cotton also had a block.
