BELLE — Falling to Belle’s Tigers and Newburg’s Wolves during pool play in the 10th Annual Belle Boys Basketball Tournament last week at Belle High School (BHS), Parker Jett’s Chamois Pirates looked to snap a nine-game losing streak with a victory last Thursday night in the consolation championship game over the Missouri Military Academy (MMA) Colonels out of Mexico.

Trailing 25-22 at halftime, Chamois survived three ties and three lead changes to take a 36-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Able to stay out in front throughout the final eight minutes, Chamois picked up their first win of 2026 with a 50-45 victory over MMA’s Colonels.

“I’m proud of these young men executing down the stretch of a game where we didn’t perform to standard but found a way to grind out a win,” Jett said.

Playing the entire first half from behind, Chamois finally took its first lead of the game on an Oliver Carter bucket at the 2:50 mark of the third quarter for a 29-27 advantage.

Tied at 33-33 in the closing seconds of the third quarter, Max McKague (wearing number 33), was fouled in the act of shooting a desperation half-court shot at the third-quarter buzzer which earned him three free throws.

Nailing all three of them, McKague gave the Pirates a 36-33 lead which sparked a 7-2 run that carried into the fourth quarter in which the led 40-35 with 6:22 remaining on a Brayden Cotton basket.

Named to the All-Tournament Team at Belle, Jaxon Wuelling scored six of Chamois’ final eight points giving him 14 points for the game to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.

Cotton led the Pirates with a double-double of 20 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Pirates vs. Belle

Falling 83-29 earlier this season against their Hwy. 89 rivals to the south, the Pirates looked to make sure of a closer, more competitive game last Tuesday night against the host Tigers.

Within two points at 55-53 on a Carter bucket with 4:53 remaining in regulation, Chamois suddenly saw Belle get hot to the tune of a 22-4 run throughout the rest of their 77-57 loss.

“I’m very proud of their fight and willingness to get better every day,” Jett said. “This was not the result we wanted but Coach (Jeff) Schultz has a great group and they executed down the stretch when we couldn’t get the lead late.”

Leading most of the first quarter by as much as seven at 13-6 on a pair of Cotton free throws with 2:32 for the opening period, the Pirates saw the Tigers end the first eight minutes on an 11-3 run to leave Chamois trailing 17-16 entering the second quarter.

Down as much as 11 in the second quarter by a score of 29-18, Chamois battled back to trim the deficit into single digits at halftime 34-27.

Jaxon Wuelling led the Pirates with 11 first-half points.

Constantly battling to keep the game in single digits throughout the third quarter, Chamois was able to enter the fourth quarter trailing 55-47 ending the period on a 9-5 run with Cotton scoring six of those nine points.

Making it a 15-5 run scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter, Chamois closed to within a pair before Belle pulled away with their aforementioned fourth-quarter run.

Pirates vs. Newburg

Opening last week’s Belle Tournament against Newburg’s Wolves, Jett’s Chamois Pirates had no answer for an offense that could not miss before ending the first quarter trailing 28-10.

Trailing 30-16 with 5:05 until halftime, Newburg ended the half on an 18-4 run to take a 48-20 halftime advantage before going on to leave Chamois on the wrong end of a 83-45 final score.

“They came out hot and we just weren’t able to make up the difference,” Jett said. “It’s hard to defend a team that just isn’t missing and credit to them as they made it very difficult on us.”

Jaxon Wuelling and Cotton each led Pirates scorers with 13 points while Cotton just missed a double-double pulling down nine rebounds.

Kaden Wuelling and Carter nearly made it four Pirates in double figures finishing with eight points apiece.
