Chamois coach Parker Jett said the Pirates played a tough tournament at Calvary Lutheran last week.
“Losing some of our size was not ideal for this tournament, considering some of the bigs we faced,” said Jett. “This was a learning experience for this group, especially against very good competition.”
In the round-robin tournament, Chamois opened against the St. Louis Patriots in a 60-28 loss.
Max McKague, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished with three treys for his nine points, and Kaden Wuelling scored nine, as Victor Slack put in five, Jaxon Wuelling and Oliver Carter each had two, and Grayson Gerloff finished with one.
In the second round, the Pirates lost to Columbia Independent, 65-29.
J. Wuelling paced the team with 23 points, including a pair of treys, as Carter added six, followed by Gerloff and McKague (3 each), and Rex McKague and Slack (2 apiece).
Chamois closed out the tournament with a 78-45 loss to the St. Louis Knights.
J. Wuelling had another solid game, draining five three-pointers and finishing 6-8 at the stripe for 23 points. McKague added seven, Carter scored six, K Wuelling posted four, Gerloff had three, and Levi Weed posted two.
“Our guys have been competitive and resilient all year, and I have said it plenty of times, but that next man up mentality really has been how it’s gone this year,” said Jett. “I’m really proud of our young guys stepping up in moments we need them. We didn’t perform to the standard we have for ourselves, but I’ve seen a lot of progress this year, and we are going to make some noise here to end the season!”
On Tuesday of last week, the Pirates lost to New Haven on the road, 54-42.
Chamois trailed by just three at the break, 23-20, with the third-quarter swing (21-9) pushing the Shamrocks ahead for good.
J. Wuelling went 9-10 at the line and hit a trey on his way to 32 points to lead all scorers. M. McKague (6-6 FT) added eight points, and Weed scored two. Gerloff posted three assists.
On the glass, Carter grabbed six, followed by J. Wuelling and Weed (5 each), K. Wuelling and Gerloff (3 apiece), and M. McKague (1).
Defensively, Slack counted three blocks, and M. McKague posted two steals.
“The boys played hard and really showed that next man up mentality,” said Jett. “We’ve dealt with injuries and sickness all year, and had our chances in this game; we just fell short. Jaxon had a great game, and I can’t fault any of our guys for their effort.”
